Rikki grabbed a halter off the hook as she walked through the small barn in her backyard. She didn't look to see if Trigger was in his paddock, she already knew that he would be next door. She jumped the fence, to her neibours paddock, seeing him grazing on the grass.
Rikki was sure there was a horse in the barn, she had heard it, but she was yet to see it. There was a girl too, about her age, but she hadn't had a good look. SHe had been too busy trying to keep Trigger in his own paddock. She didn't know if the family had noticed there was an extra pony in their yard, and Rikki would like to keep it that way. She knew Trigger would only do it for a few more days, and then he would get bored, and stay in his own.
She strode over to the palomino pony, leaning down to buckle the halter around his face, pulling on the lead rope. He kept eating and she huffed, resting her elbow on his back, head in her hand. Trigger was small, his back ending just under her arm. He was a pony, on all accounts, and Rikki was almost too big for him now. Her parents had bought him for her when she was eleven, five years ago.
People thought they were an odd match; a sixteen year old girl on a childs pony, but the two were a good pair, and knew each other perfectly.
They often went to pony club, beating against girls on their ellegant thoroughbreds. Her parents could buy one for her, if they sold Trigger, but Rikki had vehemently refused to do so. SHe didn't want a horse; she had Trigger.
The pony looked up, turning his neck to look at her, an expression on his face that clearly read 'Okay. I'm done. We can go.'
Rikki smiled, pushing off Trigger, leading him to the gate, back to their yard. She was closing the gate behind them, when a voice rang out.
